Ryan VanZant has spent his career helping people better understand the natural world. As Executive Director of Rolling Hills Zoo near Salina, Kansas, he oversees one of the state's premier zoological attractions, where conservation, education, and animal welfare come together to inspire visitors of all ages. Before joining Rolling Hills Zoo more than five years ago, Ryan served as director of the Hutchinson Zoo and spent over a decade with the University of Oklahoma's Biological Survey, leading environmental education programs and participating in prairie bird research. His passion for the Great Plains and its wildlife ultimately made Kansas the place he chose to call home.

Ryan's fascination with animals began in childhood, growing up between the city and the countryside in Fort Wayne, Indiana. What started with collecting frogs, turtles, and snakes eventually turned into raising parrots, volunteering with peregrine falcon conservation efforts, and later becoming a licensed falconer. Throughout his career, he has trained animals for educational programs, contributed to wildlife research, and championed positive reinforcement training that prioritizes animal welfare. Those experiences shaped his philosophy that meaningful conservation begins by creating personal connections between people and wildlife.

Today, Ryan is leading Rolling Hills Zoo into its next chapter through major exhibit expansions, species conservation programs, and innovative educational experiences. He is especially passionate about preserving North America's disappearing prairie ecosystems and believes zoos play a vital role in protecting biodiversity while inspiring future generations to care for the natural world. Whether discussing endangered species, prairie birds, or the importance of connecting children with nature, Ryan brings an infectious enthusiasm and lifelong curiosity that makes conservation both accessible and deeply meaningful.
