Juneteenth Kansas- Shane Carter

Shane Carter is the executive director of the Kansas African American Museum in Wichita, Kansas. Originally from Troy, Ohio, Carter earned a business degree from the University of Wisconsin while playing collegiate football and later completed a master's degree in educational administration. Before joining the museum, he spent 13 years leading the Lincoln Community Center in Ohio, where he expanded educational programs, community services, and capital projects that positively impacted thousands of residents.

A passionate community leader, coach, entrepreneur, and advocate for youth development, Carter has dedicated his career to creating opportunities through education, workforce development, and historic preservation. Since moving to Kansas in 2025, he has focused on expanding the museum's statewide impact, preserving African American history, and developing educational programs that connect Kansans of all backgrounds with the stories that have shaped the state.

Drawing on decades of experience in nonprofit leadership, community engagement, and organizational development, Carter brings a servant-leadership approach to his work. He is committed to ensuring that the stories, achievements, and contributions of African Americans in Kansas are preserved and shared for future generations, while creating welcoming spaces for education, dialogue, and cultural understanding across the state.
