Jim Gray, known throughout Kansas as "The Cowboy," has spent a lifetime preserving and sharing the history of the American West. Raised on a ranch near Geneseo, Kansas, Gray developed a passion for cowboy culture and Kansas history at an early age. His fascination with the state's cattle-driving era led him to become a respected historian, author and storyteller, dedicating years to researching the people, places and events that shaped Kansas. Throughout the interview, Gray explains how the arrival of Joseph McCoy's stockyards in Abilene transformed Kansas into a cattle industry powerhouse and recounts the colorful, often chaotic stories that defined the state's famous cattle towns.
Drawing from both historical research and personal experience, Gray reflects on the life of the cowboy, past and present. He shares stories from a modern cattle drive he helped organize along the historic Chisholm Trail, offering a glimpse into the challenges and rewards faced by the drovers who once moved cattle north from Texas. While ranching has evolved through modern technology and improved livestock management, Gray believes the spirit of the cowboy remains unchanged—defined by a deep connection to the land, livestock and a way of life uniquely tied to the American prairie.
The conversation also explores a lesser-known side of Gray's interests: UFO history. As a board member of the Geneseo City Museum, he helped restore and preserve the legacy of Dr. Elmer Jansen, whose extensive collection of UFO research has made Geneseo known as the UFO Capital of Kansas. Gray recounts a mysterious experience he had in 1972 involving a bright light and an unexplained dust devil, a story that eventually connected him to the museum's unusual history. Whether discussing cowboys, Kansas horizons or extraterrestrial mysteries, Gray's love for the state's stories and landscapes shines through, revealing a lifelong commitment to preserving the rich and often surprising history of Kansas.
