Reimagine the Kansas Flag

Reimagine Kansas the Flag Campaign is a community-driven initiative designed to engage Kansans in creative expression, storytelling, and state identity.

While the Kansas state seal continues to represent the state’s historical foundation, this campaign explores how the state flag might better reflect modern Kansas — its people, industries, landscapes, and culture.

Participants are invited to submit original flag designs accompanied by a brief explanation of their symbolism. Submissions may be featured across Ask A Kansan platforms to highlight the diverse perspectives and creativity found across the state.

This initiative aims to:

  • Foster community engagement

  • Encourage creative participation

  • Celebrate Kansas identity through design

Submissions should take into account the North American Vexillogical Association's five principles for a good flag.

The Five Principles are:

  1. Keep It Simple.  The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory.

  2. Use Meaningful Symbolism.  The flag's images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes.

  3. Use 2 or 3 Basic Colors.  Limit the number of colors on the flag to three that contrast well and come from the standard color set.

  4. No Lettering or Seals.  Never use writing of any kind or an organization's seal.

  5. Be Distinctive or Be Related.  Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections.
