Walking Across America, Neriah Guerin Finds the Heart of Kansas
Nearly 3,000 miles separate the Venice Fishing Pier in Los Angeles and Times Square in New York. A distance that seems daunting to even think about for someone to drive, let alone walk.
Neriah Guerin, 29, is originally from Florida but currently calls Louisville, Kentucky, home. He started his journey across America on June 1st in Los Angeles, California. By day 85, Guerin had made his way into Kansas near Syracuse, Kansas, in the southwest corner of the Sunflower State. In just 11 days, he had made his way to central Kansas and the town of Lindsborg.
We met up with Neriah on the morning of September 4th as he left Lindsborg and headed toward Salina along Highway 81. It was easy to spot Neriah because he is not only walking across America, he is also juggling the entire way, a sight that definitely catches your eye while passing him.
Neriah has become very fond of Kansas. Admittedly, he stated that he had a low opinion of Kansas based on previous trips down I-70. He held the common misconception of Kansas being flat, boring, and not leaving much of an impression. His outlook has taken a 180, finding the hospitality unmatched and the kindness of complete strangers who put him up for the night, donate meals, and offer support throughout the state.
When asked what he expects for his remaining time in Kansas, Guerin stated that he expects to see the same warmth and friendly nature of Kansans in eastern Kansas that he found throughout central and western Kansas. He also said he has a lingering feeling that Kansas will be one of his favorite states in America.
