Unbound Kansan- LeLan Dains

LeLan Danes is the executive director of Kansas Spanish Speakers, a nonprofit dedicated to building bridges between Spanish- and English-speaking communities across the state. Based in Emporia, his organization provides advocacy, education, and resources—from helping individuals navigate immigration and healthcare systems to equipping businesses and communities with the tools to communicate across language barriers.

A Lyon County native, LeLan’s path has been anything but conventional. From working in outdoor recreation and traveling internationally to co-founding what would become the world-renowned Unbound Gravel cycling event, his experiences have shaped a deep belief in the power of community and opportunity in rural Kansas. His journey into language and cultural work began with a personal goal of becoming fluent in Spanish, which quickly grew into a grassroots effort that evolved into a statewide nonprofit.

Today, LeLan leads with a mission rooted in connection, trust, and curiosity—helping Kansans better understand one another while creating more inclusive, welcoming communities. His work reflects a broader philosophy: that when people are given the tools and confidence to communicate, stronger, healthier communities follow.
